It’s campaign season in Oklahoma City, and that means political signs are popping up everywhere. But before you start planting your candidate’s name on every street corner, it’s important to know: where can you legally place political signs in OKC without getting fined—or having them taken down?
At Sign It Up, we’ve been helping political campaigns make an impact since 2005. Here’s a helpful guide to keep your signage campaign compliant, effective, and visible in all the right places.
Best Places to Display Political Signs
1. Private Property (With Permission)
This is the safest and most effective spot for your signs. If you get the go-ahead from the property owner, you can install political signs on front lawns, fences, or even commercial properties—just make sure the signs are:
- Set back from the street
- Not blocking driveways or sidewalks
- Outside the public right-of-way (typically 12–26 feet from the curb depending on the street)
2. Your Own Yard
Homeowners have full rights to display campaign signs on their own property. Just avoid placing them between the sidewalk and the street—this strip is often city property.
3. Designated Areas (With a Permit)
Want to place signs in public areas or near intersections? You’ll likely need a temporary sign permit from the City of Oklahoma City. The process is simple but must be followed carefully. Call the city’s Development Center at (405) 297-2525 (option 4) to get started.
Where Not to Place Signs
To stay in compliance and avoid having your signs removed, steer clear of the following locations:
- Medians and intersections
- Utility poles, street signs, and light posts
- Public parks or city-owned land
- Traffic sightlines (within 25 feet of a corner)
- Public sidewalks or the strip between the sidewalk and the curb
The city removes signs placed in these areas—and they won’t return them.
How Long Can You Keep Political Signs Up?
In general, signs can be displayed on private property up to 30 days at a time, up to three times a year. After an election, be courteous and take them down promptly—it’s good campaign etiquette and helps keep your neighborhood tidy.
Smart Tips for Political Sign Success
- Scout High-Visibility Areas: Focus on roads with lots of traffic—but still legally safe.
- Use Durable Materials: Oklahoma’s wind is no joke. Make sure your signs can hold up.
- Check Regulations by City or County: Some surrounding areas (like Norman or McClain County) may have slightly different rules.
